Howard Aschenbrenner
Died at age 65, of Moscow, ID

OBITUARY>
6/27/1947 — 8/10/2012

Howard Ray Aschenbrenner was born June 27, 1947, to Harry and Stella (Hosley) Aschenbrenner in Moscow, Idaho. As he grew, he attended public school and St. Mary's Elementary. Fortunately he liked his second-grade teacher, because after missing too many days for the year due to rheumatic fever, he found himself spending another year with her. Completing eighth grade at St. Mary's, "Howie," as his friends called him, entered Moscow High School and enjoyed playing trumpet in the band, wrestling, judo and especially his position of guard on the football team. Howard graduated from Moscow High School in 1967.

In September 1968, Howard enlisted in the Army. Carolyn believes his mother's prayers kept him serving as military police at The Presidio in San Francisco for two years instead of joining his buddy, Marvin Bieker, in Vietnam.

Howard married Carolyn King Larsen in September 1971 and they built a life together. They attended St. Mary's Catholic Church where he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. On Thanksgiving for nine years (1994-2003) you would find Howard and Carolyn serving community dinner at the church for anyone who was in need. Howard retired in February 2010 after spending 21 years telling jokes and working long hours at Clearwater Paper in Lewiston, Idaho. When he wasn't at work he could be found outdoors gathering wood or edible mushrooms, fishing or just walking the dog at the park.

Howard will be missed by his family including his wife of close to 41 years, Carolyn; children Mark (wife, Trinity) Larsen of Spokane, Wash., Heather (husband, Christopher) Aschenbrenner Boyd of Boise, Idaho; his brother Forrest (wife, Karen) Aschenbrenner of Lacey, Wash.; several grandchildren; a niece; cousins; and his beloved dog Foxey.

The family feels very fortunate to have had the last three years with Howard. He spent the fall of 2009 in five different hospitals. His doctors gave him a 50/50 chance of survival after the discovery of necrotizing fascaitis in his right leg. With a new lease on life Howard walked out of the last hospital three months later with a renewed faith and mission to show his family how much he loved them. This summer he spent time with his brother, children and grandchildren. He spent time traveling the area and his granddaughter mentioned during her visit that "Grandma and Grandpa really are enjoying and loving each other."

We are thankful for this time because Howard suffered a stroke coming home from a trip to Lewiston with Carolyn on Wednesday, Aug. 8. Even after excellent care at Pullman Regional Hospital, Howard passed away Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, at the age of 65.

A Vigil Service was at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Moscow, followed by a dinner at St. Mary's Family Center.

Arrangements were entrusted to Short's Funeral Chapel, Moscow, and online condolences may be sent to www.shortsfuneralchapel.net
