Marikay Crowley Devereaux
Died at age 74, of Deer Park, WA

OBITUARY
9/07/1949 — 3/23/2023

Marikay Devereaux, 74, of Deer Park, passed away in Granite Falls on June 17, 2023, at home in the care of family, and with the love of family near and far.

Marikay was born January 9, 1949, in Spokane, Washington, to Lucile and Ward Crowley. She graduated from Moscow High School in 1967 and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in Early Childhood Education from the University of Idaho.

She cherished her husband, Dave, with whom she had been in love since they met at age 16 and married in 1969. They had three children, Scot Devereaux, Jennifer (Jenny) Devereaux (Kearns), and James (Jim) Devereaux. She was a grandparent to Mikayla Kay Goodwin, Elicia Goodwin, and Leo Devereaux.

As a beloved educator, Marikay spent 17 of her 25-year career teaching first grade at St. Thomas More Catholic School in Spokane, Washington. By her retirement, she had taught almost 500 children to read and write, including her children and grandchildren.

She loved being a mother and a teacher. She put a lot of mothering into her teaching and a lot of teaching into her mothering. She considered herself very blessed and said that children made her life rich. She loved learning herself and was intellectually curious, feisty, and determined to the end.

Marikay was predeceased in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, her siblings Kathleen Baker, Margaret Gentry, Jean Marshall, and Tom Crowley, and a beloved extended family. She will be missed but her spirit will be impossible to forget.

Deer Park, and her family farm there, were 'home' regardless of where she lived. She will be returned home and rested in a plot next to her parents.

The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am this Saturday, 6/24, at St. Thomas More parish in Spokane (515 W St. Thomas More Way, Spokane, WA 99208). There will be a short reception followed by a graveside service in Deer Park at Woodland Cemetery. All are welcome.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to St. Thomas More Catholic School in support of young readers. To view and sign Marikay's online guestbook please visit www.lauerfuneral.com
