Spouse: Betsy
Children: none (Betsy has two and two grand-kids, so
I sometimes play “Grandpa John”.)
Occupation: Systems Programmer (IBM Mainframe operating
system and network)
News: I returned for a visit to Russia and Estonia in 1996, where I
was an exchange student in 1969. Finally married at the tender age of
50, I now own a house in the south end of Everett (near Mill Creek).
I have worked for Safeco Insurance Company for around 22 years, keeping
their large-scale computer systems happy. I fly airplanes and gliders
as often as I can and am a pilot for the Paine Field Squadron of the
Civil Air Patrol. In January I realized another dream when I bought
my own airplane – a 1977 Cessna Cardinal RG – and flew it
back from Oakland, California, to its new home at Paine Field. I’m
looking forward to the flight to Moscow in July to see my friends from
some of the most vivid and important years of my life.
Update 5/2017:
About 10 years ago Liberty Mutual bought Safeco and moved my office down near the Seattle
waterfront, with a tremendous view of Elliott Bay. We joined a larger group of systems programmers
in supporting mainframes in three data centers across the country. The larger the shop, unfortunately,
the more formal and burdensome the rules. I began to ask myself why, at age 67, I was still pulling
all-nighters to upgrade an operating system on the other side of the country or to be on call 24x7 every
other week. I retired at the end of January 2017 and now have plenty of time, weather permitting, to
pursue my passion of flying. Betsy has been retired since early 2015. We occasionally like to fly out
for brunch at places like Port Townsend, Bremerton, Tacoma Narrows, the San Juan Islands, or Seaside.
