2017:
So I’ve tried to write this updated bio for some time. What a befuddling enterprise! Memory is a trickster, I’m certain you will all agree.

I remember getting on a plane on New Year’s Day 2001, leaving New England (Boston) with a one way ticket to Seattle. I landed, safely. Pat Porter picked me up at the airport and we drove to Port Townsend where, except for frequent forays back and forth, West to East and back again, I’ve been ever since.

Along about 2005 I came out of the closet and explained to my children that I am Bi-coastal. My three grown children, Anna, Barton, and Andrenika, are fairly enlightened and, at the risk of alienation, I would consider them liberal.

We are all living in the Northwest; Kirkland, Port Hadlock, Portland, and Nika, my youngest, seems to be traveling continuously working on environmental and cartographic projects all over the West, so I built her her own tiny house on my five acre “park” between Port Ludlow and Port Hadlock.

I still own and operate my business, marine towing, salvage, and environmental mitigation, and have no intention of retiring and live in a two-stall horse barn that I renovated while I prepare myself to build yet another house.

I continue to write, mostly opinions of a technical nature, and have way too many boats (twelve at last count) but love but one, a 47-foot classic cutter rigged ketch built in 1955 and rebuilt lovingly from 1976-1996. I try to be obsessive about sailing, so much so that I keep a partner interest with my grandson in a great little cat boat out in Oriental, North Carolina. I buy varnish in bulk.

There are two principals that I have tried to live by ( among a bunch of others that I have a hard time remembering). “Keep the best and sell the rest!” ( anybody want to buy a boat?)and “If you are not happy doing what you are doing, do something else!”.

Okay then, of course there’s “Follow your bliss!”, “ Don’t eat anything that comes in a can!”, and “Golf is only a game!”

Now, if I can remember where I put the stamps, I’ll mail this off.

2007:

Hello Everyone,
I’ll try to make this as brief as possible. Not long after our last
reunion I left the publishing business in Boston and returned to my love of the water. I am living in Port Townsend, Washington, own and manage a Marine Towing and Salvage business, operate a Whale Watch boat from May to October in the San Juan Islands and teach Merchant Marine Officer Certification courses in California ten weeks out of each winter. I keep a sailboat in Oriental, North Carolina where my grandson is growing up, spend as much time with my three children, Anna (Boston), Bart (Seattle), and Nika (Martha’s Vineyard), and endeavor to write fiction not as much as I’d like to.

I look forward to seeing you all at the reunion Although she did not graduate from MHS, an old friend you may all remember, Pat Porter, who also lives in Port Townsend, will be traveling to Moscow with me.
Peace to you all … and, oh yes, lest I forget later…Randy McPherson
please bring your brother’s contact info. I spent a week in Mexico last
year with Steve Doyle. He was asking. And so was my sister, Kathy.

Best Regards,
Roger Slade
